- Abstract

The method of choice was a qualitative content analysis with a comparative case study design. The cases were analysed with a theoretical framework consisting of gender perspectives and criminological theories, alongside a review of prior research and official reports. The findings of this study highlight distinct differences between adolescent girls and women. Women typically assume logistical and supportive roles, consistent
with the findings of the literature review, whereas the adolescent girls were directly involved in violent actions, challenging traditional gender norms. Relationships were crucial in facilitating entry into the criminal sphere. Additionally, economic hardship and social marginalisation emerged as significant motives for involvement. These insights reveal gaps in how women’s roles in organised crime are understood and addressed, emphasizing the need for nuanced
approaches to account for gendered dynamics and socio-economic factors. The study aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of women’s involvement in criminal networks, informing both academic research and crime prevention strategies. (Less)
