Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the psychological processes that occur in women who are in a psychologically violent relationship and what it is that causes them to leave the relationship. We have selected five autobiographies whose content relates to the purpose of this thesis. Our method is a thematic content analysis used for analyzing texts. The autobiographies that we choose show women’s own experiences of violence in a heterosexual relationship. The autobiographies cover the entire relationship, from the beginning until the women leave the relationship. Our thesis shows a complex insight into what makes women leave a violent relationship. Our study shows that the normalization process is a significant part of psychologically... (More)
The purpose of this study is to examine the psychological processes that occur in women who are in a psychologically violent relationship and what it is that causes them to leave the relationship. The autobiographies that we choose show women’s own experiences of violence in a heterosexual relationship. The autobiographies cover the entire relationship, from the beginning until the women leave the relationship. Our thesis shows a complex insight into what makes women leave a violent relationship. Our study shows that the normalization process is a significant part of psychologically violent relationships. Women go through several stages of adaptation, beautification of the relationship, coping strategies, diminishing the violence they are exposed to, isolation, and emotional dependence on their partner. We discuss how these stages can differ depending on the individual and the life situation. Some stages in the normalization process and coping strategies are more extensive, while the same stages in other relationships may be less extensive. Women exposed to violence go through different phases before, during, and after the break-up of the relationship. Even though phases can look different, we have been able to distinguish that some turning point occurs in all women and makes them come to an understanding about the violence and eventually leave the relationship.
