- Abstract
- This study investigates how young adults (aged 19–22) in Malmö communicate about consent in the context of one-night stands. Adopting a sociology of law perspective, it examines the extent to which social and cultural factors shape such communication. Drawing on empirical material from ten in-depth qualitative interviews, the study provides rich insights into how young adults navigate consent in such casual sexual encounters. The analysis is guided by sexual script theory, revealing how norms, gender roles, and situational expectations structure communicative practices around consent. The findings indicate that these factors significantly influence how consent is expressed or withheld, producing patterned interactions in which women are... (More)
- This study investigates how young adults (aged 19–22) in Malmö communicate about consent in the context of one-night stands. The findings indicate that these factors significantly influence how consent is expressed or withheld, producing patterned interactions in which women are often positioned as passive agents and men as dominant initiators. By grounding the legal concept of consent in everyday social practice, the study offers an empirically informed account of its enactment in sexual interactions. In doing so, it contributes to sociology of law scholarship by identifying key sociocultural dynamics that merit further attention in efforts to prevent sexual violations and to develop a more nuanced understanding of consent communication.
