Although AI adoption is increasing across sectors, it has been found that Swedish companies lag behind other countries, such as the US and China. Although AI adoption is increasing across sectors, it has been found that Swedish companies lag behind other countries, such as the US and China. A key challenge identified is the lack of formalized AI strategies that align with overall business goals and support effective AI implementation.
This thesis investigates how Swedish companies with a presence in the Bay Area, US, are developing and implementing their AI strategies, aiming to inspire broader AI adoption among Swedish companies. Using an exploratory, multi-case study approach, the research builds on interviews with ten companies across various industries and sizes, supplemented with secondary data from annual reports and websites.
Findings indicate that the interviewed companies are in the early stages of forming AI strategies. While AI is used in daily operations, many firms remain in an experimental phase, awaiting measurable efficiency gains or financial returns before scaling up adoption. Larger firms often have formal innovation departments and structured technology scouting processes, whereas smaller companies rely more on professional networks, industry events, and academic insights. Companies offering AI-based products typically develop most of their AI initiatives in-house, while others engage in partnerships, hire consultants, and license-in external AI tools, among other methods. The technology’s fast speed of innovation is challenging for many companies, making long-term planning difficult. Limited data of high quality, high development costs, and internal skill gaps are other challenges mentioned. All interviewed companies have integrated AI into their business model, most notably included in their key activities or as a part of their value propositions. Interestingly, none entered the Bay Area specifically to build or access the local AI capabilities, but their presence has helped them strengthen their internal AI knowledge due to the region’s rapid technological growth. Companies also benefit from expanded professional networks, participation in industry events, and collaborative partnerships fostered in the Bay Area. (Less)
