Exploring Academic Motivation: A Factor Analysis on Personality, Academic Motivation and Time-Investment

- Abstract (Swedish)

- This study investigated the possibility of using non-contextual measurements of motivation: Time-investment and Personality. These non-contextual measurements were evaluated based on their ability to predict Grade Point Average (GPA), a commonly used metric of academic performance and used tangible for academic motivation. Results were analysed through exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and multiple regression analysis based on survey-responses, n=94. The survey consisted of two pre-existing scales, the Shortened Academic Motivation Scale (SAMS) and Mini-International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP) to assess academic motivation and personality profiles, along with an additional 10-items relating to time-investment constructed by the... Results were analysed through exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and multiple regression analysis based on survey-responses, n=94. The survey consisted of two pre-existing scales, the Shortened Academic Motivation Scale (SAMS) and Mini-International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP) to assess academic motivation and personality profiles, along with an additional 10-items relating to time-investment constructed by the authors. Participants were Swedish gymnasium and university students aged 16-30. The authors hypothesized a latent factor consisting of components from time-investment, the Five Factor Model of personality (FFM) and the SAMS to emerge, which was not the case. The SAMS-model was found to be the best predictor of GPA. Free Time Spent Studying - one variable from Time-Investment - explained 5% of the variance in GPA. The analysis on personality provided unexpected results as personality traits predicted neither GPA or Time-Investment, and in general did not contribute much to any factor. Findings suggests time to be a factor worth investigating further in terms of understanding and measuring motivation on a deeper level. Questions regarding motivation being context dependent or a general construct were also discussed as a basis for future exploration of non-contextual measurements of motivation. (Less)
