- This thesis investigates the cost efficiency of two drivetrain configurations—Battery
Only and Hydrogen-Battery—for use in mini-trains operating on non-electrified
rural railways. The study focuses solely on drivetrain-related components, in
cluding onboard energy storage, traction systems, and associated infrastructure
such as charging stations and hydrogen refueling facilities. A comprehensive lit
erature review was conducted to determine relevant cost parameters, followed by
simulation and optimization routines implemented in MATLAB. The cost per
train per trip (ptpt) was calculated for various battery capacities and infrastruc
ture configurations, and a sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the im

erature review was conducted to determine relevant cost parameters, followed by
simulation and optimization routines implemented in MATLAB. The cost per
train per trip (ptpt) was calculated for various battery capacities and infrastruc
ture configurations, and a sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the im
pact of fluctuating component prices. The results show that Battery-Only con
f
igurations are consistently cheaper than Hydrogen-Battery alternatives, both
in terms of upfront investment and operational expenditure. Depending on the
chosen infrastructure setup, the Hydrogen-Battery configurations were found to
be between 120% and 173% more expensive per train per trip. However, the
study relies on several broad assumptions and considers only drivetrain com
ponents in the cost analysis. As a result, the optimization outcomes should be
interpreted with caution. The findings should not be viewed as a comprehen
sive investment recommendation, but rather as an indicative cost comparison

transportlösningar, särskilt i glesbygdsområden där alternativen ofta är begränsade. Denna
uppsats undersöker potentialen för små eldrivna tåg – i storlek liknande bussar och drivna
antingen av batterier eller bränsleceller – för användning på icke-elektrifierade järnvägslinjer

batteristorlekar, konfigurationer av laddinfrastruktur samt tankstorlekar vid användning av
vätgas. Alla beräkningar genomfördes med ett egenutvecklat MATLAB-program.
Våra resultat visar att batteridrivna tåg generellt sett är billigare, men kräver fler laddstationer
och längre laddtider. Vätgas-baserade lösningar är dyrare, men erbjuder längre räckvidd och
kan vara ett bättre alternativ där elnätet är svagt eller saknas. Studien bygger dock på flera
övergripande antaganden och beaktar endast kostnader kopplade till drivlinan, vilket kan
begränsa resultatens tillämpbarhet i verkligheten.
Denna studie visar att det finns lovande alternativ till dieseldrivna tåg och eldrivna tåg med
kontaktledning, men ytterligare forskning krävs för att fullt ut förstå kostnader som inte är
direkt relaterade till drivlinekomponenterna. (Less)
