- Title: The role and status of music theory ? an inquiry into the Arts Programme of the Swedish upper secondary school. The purpose of this inquiry is to find out what teachers of the Arts Programme say about the role and status of music theory within the different music subjects. Four teachers were interviewed, two teachers of music theory and two instrumental teachers. The interviews were formulated with open questions where the informants guide the conversation, i.e. qualitative interviews. The results show that the teachers in the study are interested in music theory and think that students need knowledge of music theory to develop their understanding of music and to improve their musical performance. The teachers describe music theory as a subject that is not very integrated with other music subjects. They also notice that many students are not interested in learning music theory because they do not know how to make use of their knowledge. I have related these results to a discussion about ideology of music education and integration of subjects.
Denna studie har som syfte att undersöka vad lärare på estetiska programmet säger om musikteorins roll och status i de olika musikämnena. Fyra lärare har intervjuats, två lärare i musikteori och två instrumentallärare. Intervjuerna har utformats med öppna frågor där informanterna får styra samtalet, d.v.s. kvalitativa intervjuer. Resultaten visar att lärarna i studien är intresserade av musikteori och tycker att eleverna behöver musikteorikunskaper för att öka förståelsen för musik och förbättra sitt musicerande. Lärarna beskriver musikteori som ett ämne som inte är särskilt integrerat i andra musikämnen. De märker också att många elever inte är intresserade av att lära sig musikteori för att de inte vet hur de ska använda sina kunskaper. Dessa resultat har jag kopplat till diskussioner om musikpedagogisk ideologi och ämnesintegration. (Less)
