Abstract
This essay in historical archaeology deals with cultural-historical values of buildings and in

this case the old train- and ferrystation in Helsingborg. The building has from the day of its

opening in 1898 been exposed to threats of demolition since its original purpose was as a

temporary building with intension of being replaced within a couple of years. After having

seen two World Wars, eventhough Sweden never participated, and the ferrytraffic with its ups

temporary building with intension of being replaced within a couple of years. After having

seen two World Wars, eventhough Sweden never participated, and the ferrytraffic with its ups

and downs the station was an important part of Helsingborg. All the ferrytraffic over the strait

to Denmark was handeled by the old train- and ferrystation untill 1955, when a competative

ferrycompany was built close to the old station. After a hundred years of service the old

station was closed down when a new station was built i Helsingborg in 1991 with the

intension of gathering all travelers in one building. When you determine the cultural-historical

value of a building you go through different kind of criterias which then determines the level

of protection. The old train- and ferry station hasn?t got the highest level of protection but is

regarded as a buidling with particually high value by the construction law. After reviewing

records from the municipal executive board, city council, construction committee, and

cultural committee together with articles and a questionnaire an answer started to emerge.

The building, today, is functioning as a nightclub, The Tivoli, which arauses more questions.

Is an activity dependent on a building? In this case the results say yes. The majority claim that

The Tivoli wouldn?t be The Tivoli without the building. The old train- and ferry station has

according to both municipal and citizens of Helsingborg, a high emotional value and the

majority definetly wants to preserve the building in it's rightfull environment. (Less)
