- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how young people who have chosen not to drink alcohol experience themselves and their surroundings. The aim was to find out what role temperance plays in their perceived identity. I also wanted to find out how they experienced the views of them, temperance and the temperance movement in their surroundings. Finally, I was interested in the question about alcohol, witch significance they believed it had for them and their surroundings. As theoretical ground, I used Howars S. Becker's theory about outsiders. This based on the fact that there in Sweden today is more uncommon to not drink alcohol than to drink it. To get to know as much as possible about their experiences, thoughts and feelings I decided to do interviews. The interviews where planned to be open interviews but in the working process with interviewing they transformed in to semi structured interviews with recurring questions. The interviews focused in three themes, temperance, alcohol and the temperance movement. For this study, I met with five participants between 17 - 24 years old, three female and two male. When it come to temperance and identity none of the participants thought it affected who they are even though they all more or less had experience in being treated differently because of their temperance. As non-consumers, they sometimes were expected to have strong opinions about alcohol and alcohol consumption. Even so, none of them expressed that they had anything against people who drink alcohol even if they worried about the high levels of consumption and drinking among minors. For those participants who chose to avoid places and parties containing alcohol, temperance was seen as easy. The participants that chose not to avoid did however experience it as difficult. (Less)
