The cities that has been part of the survey are: Skanör ? The cities of Skanör ? Falsterbo and Malmoe were important market places for the medieval Scania market with the herring fishery in focus. The cities? birth has to be looked upon in relation to these activities. Landskrona was built on royal initiative in the end of the middle ages when the Scania market can be said to have served it's purpose.

To get a better image of the archeological aspects of the activities in these areas, and of how the shores were used in urban environments an analogy to the city of Stralsund has been made. In this city the archeological material and written sources are better than the ones from the Scanian cities that the survey in this essay is based upon. (Less)
