We present a biased analytic framework that captures both theory by James Robinson, Xiaming Huang and Dieter Senghaas. The application of techniques adopted from best-practice modernisation theory shows no evidence that economic development has a causal effect on democracy or that economic development influences the likely of democracy. More likely, the modernisation theory shows that modernisation is path dependent when it comes to the matter of developing democracy in China. (Less)
