Abstract
Titel: Rockmusic preferences in the rock programme. Popular culture, music preferences and repertoire inside a teaching institution. This paper raises some questions about the popular music that exists outside as well as inside institutions. The answers are compared to those concerning the music they used to like before they entered the education as well as the music played on the ensemble lessons at the programme. The result suggests little difference between music listened to and played and a minor change in music preferences after the students attend the... (More)

This paper raises some questions about the popular music that exists outside as well as inside institutions. From the example of popular music and rockmusic the students of a music teacher education programme based on rock music are asked for their taste for music in a brief questionnaire. The answers are compared to those concerning the music they used to like before they entered the education as well as the music played on the ensemble lessons at the programme. The result suggests little difference between music listened to and played and a minor change in music preferences after the students attend the music teacher education programme. The answers indicate no taste for current hit music and little interest for music produced with computers and sequensers. The music played at the ensemble lessons is close the taste expressed in the survey. It might be possible to read the results concluding that students in a natural way change taste slightly affected by the musical environment and that the music played at the programme can be described as genres played and recorded with instruments rather than computers. The discussion includes thoughts about the relation between music played inside an institution and the music outside this environment and touches the complex and interesting task to work with and teach popular music in institutional settings.
