This paper is an analysis of Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando. My rendering of the novel is inspired by queer-theory and in particular the theories of Judith Butler. In my interpretation I have put my focus mainly on androgyny and transvestite disguise. The purpose of my analysis is to create an understanding of the theme of androgyny in Orlando and see how it relates to the writer's feminist approach. I?ve also used concepts like transvestite disguise and cross-dressing to interpret the main character, Orlando's constant changes of clothes, between female and male clothing. Thus I want to se whether Orlando can be perceived as a novel where androgyny and transvestite disguise contribute to a potential dispersion of the binary... (More) - Abstract

Denna uppsats är en analys av Virginia Woolfs roman Orlando. Jag gör en tolkning av romanen med hjälp av queerteori och då huvudsakligen Judith Butlers teorier. I min tolkning har jag huvudsakligen fokuserat på androgynitet och transvestitisk förklädnad. Syftet med analysen är att skapa en förståelse för androgynitetsmotivet i Orlando och se hur det förhåller sig till en feministisk ansats hos författaren. Jag har även använt mig av begrepp som transvestitisk förklädnad och cross-dressing för att tolka huvudkaraktären Orlandos ständiga byten av kläder, mellan kvinnliga och manliga kläder. Jag vill således se om Orlando kan uppfattas en roman där androgynitet och transvestitisk förklädnad bidrar till ett eventuellt upplösande av den binära könsordningen och kanske även förändrar synen på kön och genus distinktionen.
