Abstract
This thesis deals with information provision to the knowledge intense biotechnology businesses of Ideon Science Park in Lund, Sweden. Previous research concerning the information needs of Science Park companies has been conducted from the information provider s perspective. Instead, we apply a user perspective to find out what information needs these companies have, and how they prefer to acquire information. Central terms are: information, -needs, -acquisition, -consciousness, -strategy, small and medium sized enterprises, scientists and engineers, information (resources) management, networks, tacit knowledge, knowledge transfer and innovative milieux. The companies need scientific and business information; the latter is easily obtained within Ideon. The biotech businesses do not have a large amount of external contacts; the main part remains within their own companies and at Lund University. The Ideon network is not strong enough to be an asset regarding knowledge transfer, and could easily be strengthened. The businesses we have studied either have no information strategies at all, or not fully developed ones. All interviewees are educated on a high level and prefer to conduct their own searches. Their use of libraries is limited. Printed materials are considered reliable, but not always up-to-date, and remain an important source, and the Internet has proceeded conversations as the primary source for scientific information. Conversations are an especially important aspect for information transfer that could be encouraged. All the enterprises studied can benefit from common databases and similar services on the internal Ideon website. As it turns out, the biotech companies at Ideon will not benefit from a central information service, but need individual information strategies. (Less)
