Abstract
In this study my aim has been to discover what connections can be made between the way of creating a library building and the general values concerning the library activities and the library users. What kind of ideology could possibly be reflected in a library room? My study includes two different parts. First of all there is a theoretical section based upon literature relevant for the subject. Here I try to focus on the libraryÕs role in society as a public room. I also examine how people react to different architectural means and try to get an apprehension of the recent development in the designing of library buildings. I also examine how people react to different architectural means and try to get an apprehension of the recent development in the designing of library buildings. The second part contains an empirical survey describing the Public Library of Lund, who recently went through a major reconstruction. I had eight interviews with people in charge of different parts of this innovative process. The purpose of this was to get their opinions about the designing of the library building connected to their ideological values. I also tried to focus on the relation between the design of the room and the work methods. In the concluding part I try to compare my theoretical results with the practical applications made at the Public Library of Lund. It is for instance quite obvious that there seem to be a connection between the creation of the library room and the way to organise the profession. In terms of ideology the Public Library of Lund has its roots in the Swedish Public Library tradition as well as a solid position in the city of Lund. It has become a very open space both literally and metaphorically speaking. (Less)
