Abstract
Fountain of Knowledge? The Changing Role of the Library at the Upper Secondary School Level. There have been many changes in the Swedish society in general, and in the school system and hence the school library in particular during the last decade. The aim of this master thesis is then to study what students at the upper secondary school level consider to be the optimal school library to meet their specific information needs at school. In addition to and in comparison with this, the aim is also to study the present conditions of the upper secondary school library as described in documents, reports and other studies in this field. These aims were pursued from different perspectives in two different parts: - a theorectical part based on documents, reports and other studies - an empirical part based on interviews with students at an upper secondary school The theoretical part illustrates the present conditions and prospects of the upper secondary school library seen from different perspectives such as the librariansÕ, the teachersÕ and the school leadersÕ point of view, as well as an overall perspective based on central government and local government documents and special studies. The present study indicates a change in attitude regarding the upper secondary library. The school library has come into focus and is looked upon as the knowledge centre of the school. Nevertheless, there is a discrepancy between words and deeds. One important task for librarians and school leaders is therefore to narrow the gap and act in accordance with the purpose of the school library in order to secure sufficient means and support for the libraries to the benefit of the students.
