Abstract
This thesis investigates all aspects of quality and evaluation issues concerning collections of Internet links in public libraries today and in the future. We have studied central theories concerning quality in general as well as quality aspects regarding the Internet and Internet links. In addition to this we have made three case-studies involving the development of collections of Internet links in public libraries of different sizes. The case-studies were made as interviews with professionals responsible for selection, quality assurance and evaluation of electronic information for inclusion in the libraries collections of Internet links. In addition to this we made an e-mail interview with a librarian responsible for one of the most advanced collections of Internet links among Swedish´ public libraries. The study shows that the libraries use similar criteria in their selection and evaluation of Internet links. Most of the criteria match those we have seen in our literature studies, but some important aspects are missing, which shows that there is room for improvement. The majority of the professionals we have interviewed feels that it is an important part of a library´s task to perform a selection of materials, of every type of media, in order to present their users with quality information. They also thought that the public expects this service from their local library. Our conclusion is that it is an important and necessary part of a library´s mission to select and evaluate Internet links. We feel that it has a positive impact on the service to the public, since many users are unfamiliar with search strategies and evaluation of different sources. We predict that there will be an increase of electronic materials in the future, which underlines the importance of providing professional guidance to relevant information. It is vital to create and maintain a dialogue between the library and its users in order to ensure that the users wants and needs are met. (Less)
