Abstract
The purpose of this study was to bring forward knowledge about threats and violence in health and social-care working environments. Based on literature, I studied how the complex of threats and violence were described in research and reports, in order to find out which theories, solutions and attitudes were proposed. I also examined the extent, character, situations and consequences of threats and violence in the working environment, focusing on identifying questions, which I felt, ought to be subject of further study. The questions were: - To what extent does threats and violence occur in the care of the mentally retarded children and youths? - What nature of violence is occurring? - What are the consequences in connection to threats and... The purpose of this study was to bring forward knowledge about threats and violence in health and social-care working environments. - What are the consequences in connection to threats and acts of violence? - How does the literature describe the problem of threats and violence in the working environment of healthcare personnel? Which theories, solutions and attitudes are described? In the empirical part of the essay I have made a simple quantitative analysis of all reports on industrial injury during the year 2000, pertaining to threats and violence in the unit for care of the mentally retarded children and youths in a community in the South of Sweden. The results pointed to many reports of industrial injury, a large proportion of violence without previous warning, mostly lesser physical injuries such as bites, scratches, kicks and hair-pulling, few reports of illness directly related to reports of industrial injury.
