The purpose of examining girls who are taken into charge according to the law (1990: 52) with special regulations concerning the care for young persons (LVU), their experiences of being at a locked investigation home. What we do is based on the following questions at issue: · How do the girls experience the time at the investigation home? · Do the girls feel involved and can influence the decisions in the investigation? · How does the compulsory residence at the home affect the investigation To answer these questions we interviewed four girls who at the time resided at a locked investigation home, Lundens Ungdomshem. There we studied journal notes from four other girls who previously had resided at the home. To acquire a background concerning how an investigation is carried out we interviewed the departmental manager at Lundens Ungdomshem. We also studied relevant literature. The investigation showed i.e. that the girls experienced confusion and fear of not knowing what was to happen of them. Different survival strategies were deployed to gain protection from the institutional world. Some experienced the compulsory residency as a security, a safe have from a world that had been harsh to them. At the same time, the security creates a worry for the future when they are without this it. The girls participation or lack of participation in activities, investigations etc. can be seen as a primary adjustment where the girls have taken in what the system wants them to take in, but can also be seen as a secondary adjustment where the girls use different survival strategies. A part of the girls chose not to be a part of their investigation and that the fear of being misunderstood was an obstacle. It can also be because the purpose of an investigation has not been fully understood by the girl. By approving written material, some could feel that they actively were taking part in the investigation. (Less)
