- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to search for factors that have provided a significant change in the life of five girls, aged 18 to 24 at the time of the study, who was, or had been, sentenced to institutional care. Another important starting point for the responsibility of society for children and young people is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Sweden has ratified. Three of the girls had their treatment experiences behind them and the other two were in treatment for problems related to drugs and social neglect at the time for their interview. The study was based on interviews with the girls. The most important factors of change, according to the girls, were to be trusted and loved by a person close to them; a family member or an other person of significance. Also staff members at the institutions provided attachement bonds that the girls would gain strength from. When the girls felt that they had a relativly secure emotional base, they were able to gain competence by changing negative habits to positive life patterns. This study indicates the importance of secure emotional attachement for the developing of competence and coping skills over time, in order to change negative and destructive life patterns. It also stresses the importance of a closer cooperation between society moral and treatment ideologies in order to meet the needs from girls with this kind of problems. (Less)
