Abstract
Gypsies are a group of people that have no state of their own but nevertheless are represented in most of the world's countries. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the plight of gypsies in Zagreb, Croatia. I also wish to give an insight into the housing and living conditions they endure. The main questions I used to help me with this study are: "What is the condition of their housing? "Why are their housing conditions the way they are?" To answer these questions I have interviewed representatives from the government and organisations solely or primarily working with gypsies The interviews and research shows clearly that gypsies are a segregated minority in Croatia that exist in substandard housing. They find themselves in a position where they no longer are in control of their own destiny. Previously they have received much help from different volunteer organisations but since the wars during the 90's, this help has been diverted to the plight of the Albanians and others deemed to be in greater need. At the present time a governmental organisation named "The Office for Minorities" is responsible for financing several gypsy organisations. This funding goes to help gypsies with education, healthcare, sex education and more. (Less)
