Abstract
Men´s violence against women is a wide social problem with its origin in the unequal balance of power in society, where men dominate and women are oppressed because of their sex. On the basis of feminist theory, our purpose has been to analyse whether it is possible for a "feministic organization’’ (according to themselves), supported by the male dominated state, to carry out feministic politics. We wanted to find out how Operation Kvinnofrid has made the social problem men´s violence against women an official issue from former being seen as a private issue. Four different factors have been analysed: cooperation between public authorities, education of concerned professions, creating public opinion and support from the state. Does Operation Kvinnofrid change society and can their work really be seen as feministic? Or are prevailing unequal power relations on the contrary being reinforced within a state supported organization? In a case study, we have examined printed material from Operation Kvinnofrid and interviewed a person who is a member of the working team of the organization. Our conclusion has been that Operation Kvinnofrid is doing important work and has to be seen as a start to change the unequal power relations in society. Still, traditional borders have to be exceeded. We have pointed out some criticism in our investigated factors and we can establish that a fight against men´s violence against women has to be a fight about the limits of the state, and overall of official policy.
