- Abstract
- This essay concerns the discrepancy between wanting to and actually having the possibility to accomplish in social work, as described by a group of social workers (BA). The essay paints a picture of a phenomenon with importance for personnel in Human Service Organizations. Six qualitative interviews were carried out with social workers (BA) from the social services in Kävlinge. My supplementary questions were: how would they describe cases where they have not been able to do what they have wanted to; what were their experiences in these cases; how do they handle them and what obstacles would they describe as being the cause of the discrepancy. I found eight main categories of obstacles, such as the client, the working place, the social workers personality and society. The social workers interviewed often named more than one obstacle in each case. How they consider the obstacles seemed to be more important for the experience of the cases than the obstacles themselves. When the social workers were not able to do what they wanted to, it caused frustration and feelings of insufficiency. Important strategies were to find out what went wrong and to seek support from colleagues. (Less)
