- The overriding aim of the prison and probation service is to provide sentenced offenders proper care and personal change opportunities so as to prevent relapse into criminal activity. The municipalities, county councils and labour market agencies are responsible for the social welfare services as well as for housing and employment assistance and this is where the real possibility to influence the life situation of sentenced offenders lies. - The overriding aim of the prison and probation service is to provide sentenced offenders proper care and personal change opportunities so as to prevent relapse into criminal activity. The municipalities, county councils and labour market agencies are responsible for the social welfare services as well as for housing and employment assistance and this is where the real possibility to influence the life situation of sentenced offenders lies. This talks for collaboration with administrations and organisations outside the prison and probation service. A great deal of crime is committed by a small group of habitual offenders. One has seen connections between relapse into crime and preparation for release from prison. Therefore the situation of prisoners on release must improve. This report aims to broaden the knowledge about preparations for prisoner release within the Swedish prison and probation service. The work is based on literary studies. Interviews with prisoners that have been undergoing intensive supervision with electronic monitoring the four last months prior to parole are exemplifying one method used to prepare prisoners for release.
