- Abstract
- This is a qualitative study of how personal assistants (working with disabled) experience their "occupational role" that is created by and formulated during their counselling (or supervision). The empirical base consisted of interviews. In my analysis, I used Goffman’s "dramaturgical approach", an approach that views social life as performances similar to those performed at a theatre. Offering counselling can create an image of the "occupational role" as something complex that you have to reflect upon. The results showed that counselling can be experienced as both a "backstage" and a "front stage". It is defined as a "backstage" since it is a place where the assistants can relax and "get things of their chests". However it is also experienced as a "front stage" since assistants avoid to talk about certain things or to participate since they don’t want to "get things of their chest" or don’t experience that this is the right place to do it. Counselling is also a place where the "performances" of the personal assistants are prepared. The assistants play active parts and try in various ways to help the disabled to participate or to become or maintain active and influential. In the performances the assistants also try to create a distance between themselves and the disabled persons. (Less)
