Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to examine how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), working with foreign aid, work to avoid the recipients from being dependent on them as organizations. The main issues were: 1. What does the activity of the NGOs look like in the developing countries? 2. In which way do the people in the recipient countries participate in the projects? 3. What do the organizations do to avoid the recipients from being dependent on them as organizations? The essay is based on a qualititative study. The references used were articles in periodicals and other written literature, as well as a few homepages on the Internet. The references used were articles in periodicals and other written literature, as well as a few homepages on the Internet. I also made interviews with two NGOs, Plan Sweden and Save the Children Sweden. The purpose was to make neither an evaluating nor a comparative study. Instead I wanted to examine the two organizations’ way of working and connect it to the theoretical background. The main result found was that to avoid the recipients from being dependent the NGOs have to give the recipients a lot of responsibility and allow them to take care of most of the work in all stages of the project. A good communication between the NGOs and their recipients are also important, as well as education and cooperation. (Less)
