Abstract
This essay means to examine England and Wales juvenile prisons, how the judicial system and the system for imprisonment are constructed. It also means to clarify the background to this system, as well as what the theory for imprisonment of children is based on. In our essay we use a qualitative method, mostly based on written research, but we also use our own empirical study of Huntercombe Young Offender Institution. England has one of the highest proportions of children in prison in Europe. They also have one of the lowest ages of criminal responsibility in West Europe, at 10 years old. This essay means to examine England and Wales juvenile prisons, how the judicial system and the system for imprisonment are constructed. The prison population of children has increased during the last decade. The use of prison is justified by its deterrent effect. Imprisonment is seen as the last resort. It also aims to protect the public and reduce criminality. The study shows on reasons behind imprisonment of children as political rather then pragmatic. The study also shows that media's attention to juvenile offending, has resulted in a considerable influence on the system of imprisonment. (Less)
