- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay was to examine the importance language has to the feeling of being left out of the society. The intention was to compare thoughts and feelings between two different groups. One of the groups was people suffering from aphasia and the other was immigrants. In the second group I interviewed a woman who immigrated twenty years ago, and two women who immigrated ten years ago. A woman, born and raised in Sweden, I call second-generation immigrant. To get an expert opinion to these questions I turned to a speech therapist that works at Helsingborg's hospital. She works with people suffering from aphasia and immigrant-children with difficulties in speaking. I also talked to a woman working at the aphasia-association in Helsingborg. The main questions of this essay are: Does the language have any significance for being left out of the society? How does the surroundings treat a person that has defects in his or her language? To get a picture of the thoughts and feelings of the persons I interviewed, I performed the interviews as conversation-interviews. The essay is also about communication and describes what a language is. To explain the different phenomena's, I have used symbolic interaction and theory of stigmatization. The most apparent thing, emerging in my examination, is that inadequate language has a very big significance when it comes to the feeling of being left out. Other people have a tendency to look down at and categorize persons with language-defects. (Less)
