The main purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the significance of the introduction program in an individual´s integration process. We wanted to find out what it really means to be integrated, from the newly arrived refugee’s point of view and from the social workers´ point of view. Our main questions were:
• What does it mean for the individual to undergo an introduction program?
• How do the employees see at the importance of the introduction program?
• What does it mean to be integrated on the basis of social workers' perspective and clients’ perspective?
We interviewed four social workers´ and five newly arrived refugees who were involved in the programme. The interviews were semi-structured. We also studied literature, brochures and websites, where we obtained material concerning integration policies, research and theories. The analysis was based on two different theories, one by Milton Gordon and the other by José Alberto Diaz. The result of this study showed that the majority of the newly arrived refugees seemed to be pleased with the services provided by the municipality. What they were mainly satisfied with was the response from the social workers´. What the respondents lacked was the opportunity to meet Swedes. Since integration is a process involving both immigrants and Swedes, it’s important to create activities where social contact between these groups is central. Furthermore, the interviews showed that the concept of integration was similar among both the social workers´ and the refugees. (Less)
