Antika skratt - Romersk humor i satir och komedi
(2009) ARKK01 20091Department of Archaeology and Ancient History
- Abstract
- This essay approaches the humour in Rome during the Republic and the Empire, using comedies and satires as sources. The authors used are Plautus, Terence, Horace, Persius, Martial and Juvenal. With these authors’ work as a basis this essay explains what the public might have considered as funny in each genre, and who this public might have been. It presents the themes, situations and eventual persons the authors choose to joke about, and in some cases why this was the choice of target for ridicule. It also explains some of the techniques used to produce humour in writing and on stage, and how the techniques and themes differ depending on the genre and receivers.
