- Problem Sweden has developed to the diverse society of today where companies, both private and public, show a great interest and engagement in Diversity Management. In recent years the management control perspective has dominated the Swedish applications of Diversity Management. Earlier research has not dealt with the question whether or not the diversity work of the companies actually has an effect on the occupational health of the employees. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether or not the discussion on diversity in recent years has come to be dominated by marketing strategies rather than creation of tools leading to improved occupational health for immigrants. Methodology We studied the three fields of theory diversity work, management control and occupational health as a basis. The investigation was performed through qualitative interviews with employees at an office of Länsförsäkringar and at a grocery shop of Coop Sverige, and also text analysis of policy documents. Conclusions We conclude that the investigated companies have put too much effort in designing their policies, and too little on realization of the contents. The diversity work should therefore be changed from the visionary approach to a more practical work, which should arise from the local business unit, where the necessary procedures for the diversity work should be developed by the employees themselves. The attempts made to focus on the business approach leaves the employees in oblivion. We argue that a precondition for a practical implementation of diversity work is that the discussion should at the business unit base level focus on respect, equality and justice. The focus also needs to be moved from problematization of the immigrant to problematization of our way of looking at people from other cultures. (Less)
