The present essay examines the family policy of the current right winged government in Sweden and essentially two recently implemented incentives that aims at increasing the freedom to choose individual child-care as well as stimulating an increased gender equality both in the private- and the public sphere. The aim is to identify the ideology that permeates the family policy and from there critically examine this ideology from a feministic point of view. The methodology; critical ideology analyses is implemented on bills that examine both incentives. On the basis of feministic theory I investigate the issue of actual freedom of women and men in the parental role. How is gender equality affected by the design of parental insurance? What easily can be identified in the family policy is focus on freedom. A neutral state, free from political rules, is important in the family policy. This ideology does not take the structural oppression of women as a group into consideration, neither does it respect the created consensus between women and men regarding child-care. This essay shows that the ideology of the right winged government contributes to further reproduce the suppression of women. (Less)
