- Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the relation between the European Union and the Russian federation has been stressed. The Russian leadership has been severely criticised by the EU for intentionally hampering Russia’s democratic development, an issue that affects the relationship between the two parties. At the same time, the EU imports approximately 36 % of its natural gas from Russia, a number which is expected to increase to as much as 70 % in the next two decades.
By using a scenario based method, I discuss how the development of liberal democratic values in Russia and the EU: s dependence on Russian natural gas can affect the relationship between the two parties and which decisions they leaders of said powers will have to...
