Abstract
In the last decades regions have become increasingly important as actors in the global challenge for economic growth. In the last decades regions have become increasingly important as actors in the global challenge for economic growth. To be a strong competetor you need to have the right skills and in an era where knowledge-based industry is the key for economic growth the right skills is identified as the right knowledge.
The keepers of this knowledge is known by Richard Florida as the “the creative class” and by attracting this class economic growth will follow, according to his theory. With point of departure in theory on democracy I have attempted to gain a deeper understanding of what happens when leading politicians are focused on attracting a specific group of citizens.
By the methodology of idea analysis and by constructing an ideal type of the creative class I argue that the citizens in the Öresund region as described by the Öresund committee, are more or less a copy of this ideal type.
Focusing heavily on the “creatives” not only increases the possibilities for economic growth but also creates a lack of public anchorage since civic participation in a political project is dependent on getting recognized as a citizen in this project.
I therefore draw the conclusion that the making of the Öresundregion with its focus on the creative class will probably be successful in gaining economic growth but less successful concerning democratic thoughts about political projects being firmly established in the public. (Less)
