Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine experiences of treatment needs of women in drug abuse in social services and in women focus treatment institutions and to which extent the efforts are considered to be adapted to the women´s needs. The reason of this aim is the fact that women in drug abuse rather than men in drug abuse run a larger risk of being exposed to physical, psychical and sexual violence and prostitution. This is a result by the existing gender role order in the society. These factors consequently lead to that the treatments needs of women in drug abuse are more complex and different. The study was based on qualitative interviews with two informants from a social service office and two informants from two different women... (More)
The purpose of this study was to examine experiences of treatment needs of women in drug abuse in social services and in women focus treatment institutions and to which extent the efforts are considered to be adapted to the women´s needs. The study was based on qualitative interviews with two informants from a social service office and two informants from two different women focus treatment institutions. The interviews resulted in four identified themes that had a central role in the discussions: The view of the living conditions among women in drug abuse, the specific help needs, the consideration to the help needs and separate treatment respectively miscellaneous treatment. The analysis was based on one central perspective: a gender perspective with focus on Yvonne Hirdmans gender system. Perspectives of self image and self-esteem have an important part as well. An important conclusion in this study among other things is that female drug abusers need to develop and strengthen their self-esteem, self image and self-trust. Another central need is to work for the relationships with their children. With different tools both of the women focused treatment institutions take consideration to the specific treatments needs. They have different types of forum, theme-groups and programs where the women have the possibility to work with things like relationships, their sexuality, self-image and discus feelings of guilt and disgrace.
