This study examines art therapy for children living in an exposed life situation. This study is to examine if therapy is a working method in work with children living in exposure. For example children who are having a parent with addiction to alcohol, children having a parent with a psychological disorder, children with a serious disease and children with psychological disorders. A qualitative method was used and four qualitative interviews done with one educated art therapist, one educated expressive art therapist and three social workers that use an art therapeutic method. The results of the interviews have been analyzed with the help of the theory of the subconscious mind, the personal and the collective subconscious by Carl Gustav Jung, the theory of the importance of play for human welfare and the search for the self, and using the concept by Donald Winnicott and with the help of sublimation. The survey shows that art therapy is a good method to use for children living in an exposed life situation. It’s found that art therapy is a quick, practical and easygoing method. The method is fun but at the same time as it’s deep. It allows playfulness but at the same time it is very serious and complex. The survey also shows that children feel that art therapy had a positive impact on their wellbeing; they feel that their self-confidence and self-esteem has been strengthened. (Less)
