Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to inspect the very foundations of the preventive war, in form of its moral justification. In terms of exploring that fairness, the War on terror will be used for challenging the matter of justification as well as demonstrating a new and transformed way of referring to preventive aggression, as have been done by the Bush-administration since September 11. The methods of finding out if it is possible to vindicate the preventive war are gathered from international ethics. The first is of a conceptual nature and will develop three major degrees of preventive war, of which the War on terror is the most intense one. Moreover, an investigative and systematic method will be used for the critical interpretation of values and for the discussion of justifying the preventive war, while making prime use of the Just War theory.
The analysis shows that none of the degrees of preventive war is justifiable, depending of varying factors such as the lack of fulfillment of just cause and last resort criteria. However, the result depends partly on the moral values put prior to others in this thesis. (Less)
