Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how Romanian social workers, working with LGBT-people, experience their work situation and the conditions for their work. The questions at issue were; How do the social workers describe their work and the conditions for conducting this work? What kind of attitudes do they meet, regarding their work, from the surrounding society? What kinds of strategies are used and how do they discuss about these? Qualitative interviews were conducted with four social workers employed at a LGBT-organization in Romania. The theoretical framework for the study was Bourdieu’s theory on capital and field together with the concept of advocacy as a method of social work. The study shows a varied picture of the conditions for the social workers and the attitudes they meet. They experience both support for, and opposition against, their work. It is clear though that the conditions for working with the LGBT-issue is not very good. For example, the respondents describe a negative mentality against LGBT-people in the Romanian society which is an obstacle for the improvement of the situation for LGBT-people. However, the interviewed social workers experience that they collaborate well with different NGOs and other institutions. Furthermore, the study shows that the social workers have adopted various strategies for their lobby- and advocacy-work in order to be able to have an influence on LGBT-issues in Romania. Another conclusion is that the social workers’ access to different fields in society differ, which has effects on their possibilities to enhance the rights and situation for LGBT-people in Romania.
