- Abstract
- After a decade of war in Lebanon, the company Solidere has begun with a plan to rebuild and develop the downtown Beirut. The company wants to renovate and restore the old damaged buildings, and build new modern buildings as much as possible so that Beirut once again becomes "Paris of the Middle East". Large projects are always running and the infrastructure is starting to see fairly better. Many aspects show how much difference it can be between Lebanon and Sweden in the construction sector. The Civil War (1975 - 1989) and the war with Israel ended in 2006, has deteriorated the environment in the country. While the country is trying to get through the crisis and improve the environment, in the meantime rich people take the opportunity to bribe others to build as they want to, without following the rules concerning such as dangerous materials, heights, etc. The state wants to include laws and requirements regarding the environment, health and energy. As an architect in Lebanon you have great responsibilities and a leading role in the building sector. The architect is in, from the building permit application until the final inspection, which is different from the architect's role in Sweden, which is usually only in the design. Final inspection in Lebanon requires an application for a license called a "Residential License". Aspects that influence the different building techniques in Beirut are as follows: • Climate • Building Material • Population • Risk of earthquake Column system works great in Beirut, because of the many high-rise buildings the city builds, although that system is used in Sweden in case of large constructions such as mall. The calculation of the external wall's u-value in Beirut shows a big difference compared to Sweden's external wall constructions. (Less)
