In sum, if gestational surrogacy can be viewed as an expression of women´s freedom or not. To reach an understanding of freedom in gestational surrogacy, feminist theory and discourse analysis are being applied to the material which consists of scientific articles from a range of different academic disciplines. This essay shows that the understanding of freedom in gestational surrogacy is dependent on the demands of freedom from the interpreter. In general terms, this essay claims that the proponents of gestational surrogacy understand freedom mainly in terms of the right for women to choose, while the opponents understand freedom as much dependent on structural and relational conditions. The essay concludes that there is not one answer to the question if surrogacy motherhood can be viewed as an expression of freedom or not. But it should be emphasized that in gestational surrogacy there is a substantial risk that inequalities based on sex, class and race can be increased. (Less)
