Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the pupils´ perception of the school welfare officer’s professional role and availability. We also endeavored to find out to what extent the pupils express a need of a school welfare officer and whether a stigma is connected to the use of his/her consultation. We chose to conduct a quantitative survey at two different schools in the same municipality. The survey included pupils from seven different classes, totally comprising 131 participators. We discerned four main themes based on our study’s aim that helped us to answer our questions and also distinguished different aspects of our study. The themes are: the professional role, availability, necessity and stigma. The founded results of the study were analyzed through the political and structural perspectives of organizational theory and further compared to earlier studies of the school welfare officer’s professional role. The survey results told us that the majority of the pupils lacked knowledge of how to get in touch with the school welfare officer, what his/her name was and whether their parents were familiar with him/her. The question concerning the school welfare officer’s professional role was answered quite differently among the pupils. We interpret this as a general discrepancy among the students´ opinions. The pupils´ opinions considering the stigma of contacting the school welfare officer were clearly affected by their state of comfort at the school and whether they had previously been in contact with the school welfare officer. Summing up, we are able to ascertain that our study can be interpreted in different ways depending on how the school welfare officer structures his/her work. However, irrespective of whether the school welfare officer works toward pupils directly or headmost as a supervisor for teachers, we find it imperative that pupils, parents and teachers become aware of how the school welfare officer structures his/her work at their particular school. Access to the school welfare officer will become acknowledged as every pupil’s individual right in 2011; however, his/her function and professional role can be applied most efficiently only when all three actors have knowledge of how the school welfare officer actually works.
