Abstract
This master’s thesis in Strategic Communication uses Erving Goffman’s concepts of face and face-work to study interaction patterns in a Public Relations context. The purpose of the master’s thesis is to take a closer look at the role of interpersonal communication in relationship management between an organization and its stakeholders. To be able to do that, the research questions focused on how representatives deal with face-threats in meetings without risking the relationship building process. And also; is there a possibility to use face-work strategically. The method uses interviews to find out how organization representatives deal with face-threats in terms of arrogant or disrespectful behaviour by stakeholders in face-to-face... (More)
This master’s thesis in Strategic Communication uses Erving Goffman’s concepts of face and face-work to study interaction patterns in a Public Relations context. To be able to do that, the research questions focused on how representatives deal with face-threats in meetings without risking the relationship building process. And also; is there a possibility to use face-work strategically. The method uses interviews to find out how organization representatives deal with face-threats in terms of arrogant or disrespectful behaviour by stakeholders in face-to-face meetings. The final conclusion of the master’s thesis is that representatives tend to keep good relations by different evasive strategies. Face-work could be used strategically in relationship management by contributing to an increased openness between the organization and its stakeholders.
