The purpose of this essay was to investigate if there was any guiding principles for how trustees for individuals living in sheltered housings with a mental retardation were expected to act in contraceptive counselling, and if so how these were used by the manager of the sheltered housings. We were also interested to examine if the trustees for these individuals cooperated in some way with the manager of the sheltered housings in contraceptive counselling and how the manager stated that they treated individuals with a mental retardation in contraceptive counselling. The study is based on four interviews with managers of sheltered housings and one trustee. To analyze these themes we used Nirje´s normalization principle.

The main outcome of this study was that the interview persons had different answers about how to act when a person is considering the use of contraceptive. The sheltered houses didn’t provide the trustees with guiding principles in how to act in contraceptive issues, and the trustees weren’t provided with guidelines in these questions from their supervisors either.

Conclusions we drew after studying this was that the interview persons didn’t have a common way to address questions concerning contraceptives. The managers for the sheltered housings stated they had different ways in cooperating with the trustees and they also stated different ways in which they treated the women with mental retardation when it came to contraceptives. The knowledge about sexuality as well as contraceptives for these women has been described as insufficient by the interview persons. Another issue that was brought up in our interviews was that all the interview persons had opinions about relatives as trustees. (Less)
