Abstract
This report aims at a fire safety evaluation of PIVA, the psychiatric intensive care ward in Växjö. There are six beds in the ward but sometimes there are more patients and sometimes less. In PIVA patients are treated from one to six days. The report mainly focuses on prospective evacuation of the ward and on the improvements required for a satisfactory evacuation. The current fire protection has been inspected and the inspection revealed that there are things to improve.
Exits are locked and staff is consequently crucial for means of evacuation. In equivalent wards, fires are most likely to be intentional.

Exits are locked and staff is consequently crucial for means of evacuation. In equivalent wards, fires are most likely to be intentional.
Fire safety evacuation using engineering methods show that the fire protection in PIVA currently does not comply with standard requirements. In order to improve the fire protection, measures have been suggested below in order of priority.
• Bedroom mattresses must be replaced by SS 876 00 10 mattresses. Those mattresses are self-extinguished in the case of fire.
• Staff must receive appropriate training and evacuation procedure must be practiced.
• In the passage between the assembly room and the corridor, a self closing door must be installed.
• Self closing bedroom doors must be installed. (Less)
