- Abstract
- This report contains a fire safety evaluation of Le Cardinal, a restaurant and nightclub located in Helsingborg, Sweden. A normal Saturday evening Le Cardinal has about 400 guests in very various ages, from 20 to over 60 according to information from Johan Fredholm, safety
responsible on Le Cardinal. The report only covers the early stages of the fire until untenable environments occur. It just considers personal safety and does not treat possible economic losses in case of a fire.

To control if it's possible to evacuate all the people in the building before untenable environment occurs, a lot of assumptions are made based on knowledge and interviews with people. The assumptions are used in different ways in calculations, both handmade and in computer
simulations. To calculate the evacuation a program called SIMULEX has been used. Two different fire models, ARGOS and FDS, has been used to calculate the critical time considering optical density, temperature and the height of the smoke layer. A comparison between present fire safety level and the Swedish building code BBR 2002 has also been done.
The result shows that there are some problems with the current fire safety and some of the ideas that will be given to improve the buildings fire safety considering person safety is:
• To establish a safe evacuation from the second and third floor, smoke controlling measurements have to be done to prevent smoke filling.
• A mechanical smoke venting fan has to be installed to secure the evacuation.
• The emergency exits have to be more attractive and easy to find. This is very important
because all emergency exits have to be used to establish a satisfactory person safety. (Less)
