- Abstract
- My thesis is about the two wars in Afghanistan that the Soviet Union and the
United States has pursued. My aim is to use a theory of international relations,
offensive realism, and apply it to these two wars and try to explain why the two
superpowers have invaded and occupied Afghanistan. The main focus of the thesis
is to use the concept of balancing that the theory presents and to make sense of it
by using it in a concrete case of the cold war struggle and afterwards. I also look
at the strategic objectives of wealth that the theory lays out and I test it against the
United States and the Soviet Union's behavior in that region.
My conclusion is that the theory gives a good over all explanation to the two
