Their answers were analysed using R.W Connells notion of hegemonic masculinity. The result of the study showed that the Child Protection workers considered Domestic Violence as having negative effects on both the mother and the father's parenting skills. As regarding their understanding of the nature of the violence they a) saw it as a result of psychological factors rather than a thought out way for the father to gain power, b) saw it as something individual rather than structural, i.e rarely referred to patriarchy and c) considered the mothers as taking part in the violence as well. The study also showed that the respondents could consider fathers “good fathers” despite being violent partners. The needs of the children were understood as being protected from experiencing violence but still to be in contact with their father. (Less)
