Abstract
Freedom of speech was hotly debated at a high school in Karlskrona regarding Richard Jomshof, a social studies teacher and an active member of the Sweden Democrats. Due to his party affiliation, his students protested against him. Jomshof argued that he was exposed to an occupational prohibition while the students who protested argued that his views were xenophobic. This thesis aims to examine, describe and seek answers regarding Sweden Democrats’ ideology in contrast with the gloss values and doctrine of the School Policies. Jomshofs case is used here as an empirical example of a value-conflict issue in a liberal democratic society. By taking into account some theories, the analysis shows that the Sweden Democrats' ideology denotes a mixture of ethno-nationalism, ethno-pluralistic doctrine of populism. Reviewing the results underlies the two families of argument and counter-argument, from democracy and from normative nature of Swedish politics. Thus, a teacher can express his/her opinion as long as the teacher explains that it is his/her personal opinion. In that way it does not violate the school policy and with the fact that the given opinion is not a hate speech, which of course is a crime. (Less)
