- Abstract
- The aim of our study was to examine how gay parenting is constructed in Swedish newspapers. To get a more thorough understanding of the contents of the eleven selected articles, we did a content analysis. To perform a good analysis, we chose to create themes and encode the texts. The selected articles were published between the years 2002 to 2004 when gay rights to adoption were raised.
We concluded that there were different ways to construct homosexual parenting. We concluded that there were different ways to construct homosexual parenting. In the articles we could distinguish two different positions as both used different strategies to construct an image of gay parenting. We have seen a tendency in the arguments used by those who are pro gay parenting. Their argument is based on that it is the suitability as a parent who should determine when an adoption should be approved. They emphasize that there should be a right for all to be considered as an adoptive parent. They also view that there is no research evidence to exclude people with different sexual orientation than the heterosexual. We could deduce that those who take a stand against homosexual parenting tended to focus on the negative consequences that gay parenthood could result in for adopted children. They also considered that the negative social attitudes are a risk to those adopted by homosexuals in which they may be subjected to such as bullying in school. Common to the various position holders was that they both claimed the “child’s best interests” as their approach. (Less)
