Abstract
The study aims to examine how social workers experience mental health disorders among older people with lighter problems with their mental health. What do they think that elderly people worry about and how can they help them. One big problem is the question: who feels responsible for these problems and does our society services allow older citizens to speak about anxiety if the elderly people feel the need to do this. The elderly care in Sweden is, when it comes to healthcare, divided between so called municipalities and counties. This study is based on interviews with professionals in charge of handling and providing services in people’s homes, assisted living. I have investigated the general outlines of two municipalities. The aim is to enlighten the individual basis of forming a judgment about what kind of services older citizens need. It turned out that older persons in many cases find it difficult to talk about anxiety and their needs to feel safe in their own home. It is common that relatives find it easier to demand help from the public. Another problem is how precise one level of the organization needs to be in order for the other level to understand what kind of work that is needed. Special guide-lines help the investigator to understand what to ask about. But guide-lines can also lead to exclusion of subjects. (Less)
